Sow New Seeds, Grow New Roots

Just as root means the point at which something initiates its course or existence, our conference offers a fresh and original beginning. These new roots encompass all musics and music educations…all curricula and beliefs of many kinds.

As members of OMEA, we are rooted – established deeply and firmly – since 1949. We are bound together by our roots – the parts which are attached into the ground for support. Our roots also convey essentials (in a plant this is water and nourishment). For us, this essential element is the belief that every student should have access to music education where they find a meaningful place.

We will gather after coming from all directions. We will sow new seeds and grow new roots.

Keynote Sessions

Roots 2024 will take place in LONDON, ON, from November 7-9, 2024. Workshops will only be presented on November 8-9, 2024.

Through our annual provincial conference, it is the goal of the Ontario Music Educators’ Association (OMEA) and the Canadian Music Industry Education Committee (CMIEC) to heighten the educational experience of the conference and lessen any potential overtones of commercialism. Workshops are to teach educational concepts. We will also be offering a stream of workshops that will promote products or services.

The deadline for submissions for workshops for ROOTS 2024 is Sunday January 28, 2024. 11:59 pm EST.

Successful Candidates will be notified by email by the end of March, 2024.  All successful candidates will receive a FULL CONFERENCE ADMISSION (Thursday-Saturday; 2 lunches, concert, exhibit area access); an OMEA membership (if Ontario Educator).

ROOTS 2024 is calling for educators, students, and community musicians to share ideas and practices. We welcome various session formats such as facilitated discussion panels, workshops or experiential learning opportunities to rejuvenate and build community, culture and skills in music classrooms with intention and respect. It is our duty as music educators to cultivate the land and plant seeds for future generations of young musicians.
The OMEA is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible organization that is a representation of the diversity of Ontario music educators and music-makers. We are happy to introduce “Equitable and Inclusive Music Education: Resource Selection Guidelines (Guide / Companion Webinar).” We encourage applicants to use this resource as a lens through which they create their presentation. It will also be the lens through which committee members will be selecting workshop presenters for Roots 2024.
